This application supports a national initiative known as "Bells of Peace," which occurs on November 11th at 11 a.m. local time to commemorate all those who served and sacrificed in WWI.
"Bells of Peace" offers an opportunity for individuals, families, organizations, and communities to reflect on this significant moment in our nation's history. It marks the time when the guns fell silent and the fighting ceased on the Western Front at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
Here are some ways you can participate in "Toll the Bells":
- Any bell can be used for tolling, from church bells to hand bells to campus carillons to firehouse bells.
If you don’t have a bell, that's not an issue. The "Bells of Peace" Participation App provides various bell sounds for you to choose from. The app includes a countdown feature, and if you and your commemoration group have the app open and set to auto-toll, all phones will ring together at 11 a.m. local time on November 11th.
You can toll the bells manually or utilize the app for any form of commemoration or remembrance.
Furthermore, the app goes beyond this functionality. It aggregates social media posts from platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. By tagging your post with #BellOfPeace, it will be included in our management dashboard for potential publication in the app. While we may not publish every post, it serves as a way to share how you and your organization commemorated our Doughboys through Bells of Peace.
The significance of this moment lies in America's rapid involvement in WWI—from having approximately 130,000 troops to deploying close to 2 million individuals in just 18 months (April 6, 1917 to Nov. 11, 1918). Tolling the bells is a tribute to their dedication.
No veteran should ever be forgotten. Therefore, on November 11th, take a moment to honor the 4.7 million Americans who served in WWI; the over 200,000 wounded individuals; and most importantly, the 116,516 who made the ultimate sacrifice.
This national and international event is supported by the Doughboy Foundation, a non-profit 501C(3) organization committed to honoring the Doughboys and all those who served in WWI.
